The Fort Magistrate has ordered the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to conduct an investigation pertaining to alleged contempt of court statements made by SLPP MP Sanath Nishantha.

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) had accused MP Sanath Nishantha of contempt of court.

Addressing the media yesterday (23), MP Sanath Nishantha said the officers from the Attorney General’s Department and some judges are responsible for letting lose criminals who engaged in the recent violence in Sri Lanka.

“Some judges should take responsibility for this, they give bail for these criminals in one day,” he said.

Condemning the MP’s statement, JVP member and lawyer Sunil Watagala accused MP Sanath Nishantha of insulting the judiciary.

Furthermore, the Fort Magistrate today ordered the CID to obtain original videos of the press conference in which MP Sanath Nishantha had made the controversial statements.

The Magistrate further ordered the CID to conduct an investigation to determine if the MP had made any comments that slandered the judiciary. (NewsWire)
