The All Ceylon Egg Producers Association says that eggs cannot be sold at the control price imposed by the government.
Accordingly, the association has reportedly informed the farmers not to sell eggs below 55 rupees.
Chairman of the organization has said that the Ministry of Livestock calculates and provides the cost of producing an egg every month and the price calculated for this month is Rs. 49.50 per egg.
He further emphasized that in such a situation, the Consumer Affairs Authority cannot impose a control price for eggs against the law and farmers will suffer heavy losses due to this.
He had further stated that it has not been decided to stop the distribution of eggs and the traders will buy eggs at Rs. 55 from farmers.
The All Ceylon Egg Producers Association had previously decided to reduce the price of an egg by Rs. 5.00 with effect from Monday (22)
However, on the same day, the Consumer Affairs Authority had taken steps to issue a gazette fixing the maximum retail price (MRP) for eggs.
Accordingly, an MRP of Rs.43.00 was fixed for white eggs and an MRP of Rs.45.00 for a brown / red egg.
