US-China tensions : Statement from SL President “Countries must refrain from provocations that further escalate the current global tensions,”

Sri Lanka reiterated its firm commitment to the one-China Policy, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said today. 

President Ranil Wickremesinghe met with the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenghong.

In a Twitter message, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said during the meeting, that Sri Lanka reiterated its firm commitment to the one-China Policy.

He further said Sri Lanka has also reiterated its commitment to the UN Charter principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations.

“Countries must refrain from provocations that further escalate the current global tensions,” President Wickremesinghe said. 

The President added that mutual respect and non-interference in the internal affairs of countries are important foundations for peaceful cooperation and non-confrontation. 

The Sri Lankan President’s comments come as there are growing tensions between the US and China over US official Nancy Pelosi’s recent visit to Taiwan. (NewsWire)
