High-risk weather alert issued to 12 districts

The Met Department has issued a severe weather advisory for heavy rain and strong winds to 12 districts.

The weather advisory is in effect for a 12-hour period from 08.30 am today until 08.30 am tomorrow (3).

The department said the showery and windy conditions are expected to continue in the western and southern sea areas and over the southwest quarter of the island due to the active Southwest Monsoon. 

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northern and North-Western provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts. Heavy falls above 100 mm can be expected at some places in aforesaid areas. 

Strong winds of about 50 kmph can be expected at times along the western slopes of the Central hills and in the North-central, Western, North-western and Southern provinces. (NewsWire)
