The Maldivian Police have commenced arresting Sri Lankans who are engaged in a protest against the arrival of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in the country.

The President had fled to the Maldives this morning and is reportedly staying at a resort on an island in the country.

Even though he had earlier said that he will announce his resignation today as demanded by the citizens of Sri Lanka, the President had instead fled the country.

Upon reports of his arrival in the Maldives, Sri Lankans residing in the Maldives had launched a protest in the Capital Male, demanding that Gotabaya Rajapaksa be deported to Sri Lanka.

Several Maldivians too have expressed their solidarity with the citizens of Sri Lanka on social media, calling on fellow Maldivians to join the protests by Sri Lankans in the Maldives against the arrival of Gotabaya Rajapaksa. (NewsWire)
