The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to a proposal to increase train fares and other railway charges.

The government said that the recent hike in fuel prices has further increased the recurring losses in the Sri Lanka Railway Department resulting in being unable to provide proper service.

Thereby, the need to revise train fares and other railway charges have been observed at present.

A proposal has been put forward to increase train fares which have not been amended in the last 5 years and other railway charges which have also not been revised in the last 14 years.

The Cabinet has granted approval to the proposal that had been submitted by the Minister of Transport and Highways. (NewsWire)
